From Raw Materials to Sheer Bliss

Who can take a pile of bricks and turn it into a cottage? A contractor can. Who can take a few loads of concrete and turn them into a sidewalk? A contractor can. Now, not all contractors have the same skills. A contractor who primarily works on cottages would probably have difficulty making a sidewalk, for example. However, those in this industry are very used to collaborating and reaching out to others when they come across work they don't specialize in. If you think contractors and their work are awesome, then you've come to the right place. This is a friendly blog where you can read more about the topic.

Remodeling Your Kitchen? 4 Choices To Avoid

Construction & Contractors Blog

As you work to remodel your kitchen, you will want to ensure that you remodel it in a cost-effective manner that will be visually stunning over the long run. There are some materials and upgrade choices that you should avoid if you want the best long-term results.

Bold Countertops

Your countertops are a solid and expensive material that you can't easily change out. That is why you will want to avoid choosing bold countertops in a color that is trending right now but may look dated in five to ten years. With countertops, you want to choose a more neutral color that will look good over the long term. You can add more color to your kitchen in ways that are easy to change, such as with the paint colors or decorative accents. The best countertops are those with natural lighter tones that will work well even if you change the colors and material around them.

Laminate Cabinets

Laminate cabinets may look good, but they can be highly limiting. With laminate cabinets, you may save some money up-front with the cabinet installation, but you can't change the color once the cabinets are in place.

Instead, you are going to want to go with grade wood cabinets. With wood cabinets, you can stain or paint them. Once you have the solid structure of wood cabinets in place, you can change their appearance over time, so you are not locked into one color or look like you are with laminate cabinets.

Additionally, if you want to change the appearance of wood cabinets, you can just put new doors in place. With laminate cabinets, your ability to do that is more limited.

Wood Flooring

If possible, avoid wood flooring in your kitchen. Wood flooring does look stunning, but it works best in places like your living room or bedrooms where water is not a concern. In your kitchen, where you can spill water, your dishwasher could overflow, or your sink could get backed up, it is better to go with stone flooring, as the water will not damage it. Stone can last for a long time, and there are lots of different looks, styles, and price points for you to choose from.

Peel and Stick Backsplashes

Peel and stick backsplashes are nice when you rent a place, and you want to make it more personal. However, they are not a great option when you are remodeling a home that you own, as they are designed to be temporary and will look good for a year or two but aren't made to last for the long term. It is better to apply a long-term backsplash solution.

When it comes to kitchen remodeling, stick to colors and styles that will last for years and that will allow for customization, such as wood counters. Think about how the material will last and look a decade from now when making material choices.
