From Raw Materials to Sheer Bliss

Who can take a pile of bricks and turn it into a cottage? A contractor can. Who can take a few loads of concrete and turn them into a sidewalk? A contractor can. Now, not all contractors have the same skills. A contractor who primarily works on cottages would probably have difficulty making a sidewalk, for example. However, those in this industry are very used to collaborating and reaching out to others when they come across work they don't specialize in. If you think contractors and their work are awesome, then you've come to the right place. This is a friendly blog where you can read more about the topic.

Servings, Beyond Cleaning, Offered By Many Chimney Sweeps

Construction & Contractors Blog

Chimney sweep services are best known, not surprisingly, for their ability to clean or sweep out chimneys. Indeed, this is a very important service as clean chimneys are far less likely to catch fire and experience other issues. However, chimney sweeps often offer far more services beyond simple chimney cleaning. It's good for you to be aware of these services because they can be really beneficial when you have a chimney.

Fireplace Cleaning

As important as it is for your chimney to be clean, it's almost as important for your fireplace itself to be clean. Creosote buildup in a fireplace can catch fire, and that fire could easily spread throughout your home. A sooty, dirty fireplace does not look very nice, either. Some chimney sweep services automatically clean the fireplace whenever they clean the chimney, and others list this is as separate service. So, when you call to arrange for a chimney cleaning, ask whether a fireplace cleaning is included — and if not, ask for it to be added.

Chimney Inspections

Creosote buildup is just one of the many things that can go wrong with a chimney. Your chimney may develop cracks. The vent cover could come loose or blow off. Sometimes, a chimney liner may start leaking. A chimney sweep can conduct a basic chimney inspection and note any of these issues so that you can have them repaired and addressed before they lead to bigger problems, like carbon monoxide exposure or water leakage.

Carbon Monoxide Detection

Carbon monoxide is an odorless gas that is produced whenever fuel, like wood or natural gas, is burned. If your chimney is working as it should, the CO should be vented to the outside of your home. It's a good idea to have your chimney sweep check and make sure this is happening as it should. They can also show you the best place to install a CO detector so that if CO does ever start leaking into your home, you'll be alerted. Many chimney sweeps sell CO detectors, but if yours does not, they should still be able to recommend a good model and tell you where to mount it.

If you have a chimney in your home, you should have it cleaned up by a chimney sweep periodically. While the chimney sweep is there, you may want to have them perform some or all of the services discussed above, too.
